Traditional Search Engine Optimization (SEO) focuses on helping websites rank in search engine result pages (SERPs). Think of Google’s “10 blue links” — the goal is to appear near the top of that list when someone types in a keyword. Optimization involves factors like backlinks, page speed, metadata, and specific keyword targeting to earn that position.

AI Search Optimization (AIO) operates under a different paradigm. Instead of optimizing for a list of results, AIO is about ensuring your content is understood and recommended by AI-powered systems — like ChatGPT, Google’s SGE, or Perplexity — within a conversational response. These systems don’t return lists of links based only on specific keyword matches or page speed. They generate synthesized answers and intelligent recommendations based on information drawn from a wide range of sources.

AI-driven discovery is not a niche behavior—it’s the new default for millions of users.

People aren’t just searching for information. They’re asking LLMs for recommendations:


  • “What’s the best tool for B2B lead gen?”
